How does the window air conditioners work?
Q. I was wondering about those window air conditioners. Do they cool outside air and then bring it in the room or do they just suck up the air in the room and cool it and eject it back into the room. Or is it something completely different.
Asked by John P - Thu Jul 15 10:42:47 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As you have outlined : " they just suck up the air in the room and cool it and eject it back into the room." Heat of the interior is absorbed at the inside evaporator and rejected at outside condenser.

How do air conditioners produce so much water?
Q. I have one of those large single-room air conditioners because my air conditioner system just doesn't cut it, and it's linked to the outside by a hose, so I have to empty the water when it gets full. How does it manage to produce about 5 pounds of water in just a few hours? Thanks for your answers!
Asked by ILOVESCIENCE - Thu Aug 10 16:31:18 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You must have a large amount of water vapor in your air. An air conditioner works by sucking the air out of your room and then running it through it's insides. When this happens, all of the humidity in the air is removed, which creates the water. The air is then run through the compressor where the air is.. well.. compressed which makes it colder, and therefore cold and dry air is blown back into your room making the room nice and cool and confortable. Naturally, the more water vapor that is in the air, the more water vapor that is going to be removed and turned into water.

How do stand up air conditioners work?
Q. From what I understand about air conditioners/refrigeratio n units (including refrigerators/freezers) is they all exhaust heat someplace. So where do stand up AC exhaust there heat to, or do they not exhaust heat? And if they don't exhaust heat then how do they produce cold air?
Asked by Amrou - Fri Jul 25 21:23:29 2008 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments

A. the stand up unit just compresses the air it does not make it. so the unit outside of the house will make the compressed air but the actual cooling system in the house will distribute it.

How does the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment affect a person's hearing?
Q. For a physics assignment I need to describe how the hum of air conditioners and other electronic equipment can have a detrimental affect on ones hearing. Low frequencies and low intensity vibrations affect a person psychologically, but insofar I can find no evidence to suggest that due to a particularly low frequency a person's hearing would be affected. If anyone has any information that would be greatly appreciated.

A. As the small bones of the inner ear vibrates from exposure to sound, the brain processes this vibration the same as it processes all others. This processed vibration has no beneficial effect to add to the brain, and blocking the noise can cause a subdued irritation to develop in the subliminal parts of the brain. The brain gets the response to move from the unnecessary vibration as a self preservation instinct against this intrusive vibration, and subsequent inner ear fluid movement. The inner ear can be the source of many problems related to balance and vertigo is a common result. The onset of Meniere's Disease like symptoms, are common to kitchen workers in industrial situations. These symptoms will normally reverse when exposure to… [cont.]

Portable Air Conditioners - Do they really work?
Q. We have a really small apartment (900 sq ft) and it faces south/west (maximum sun exposure). The building does not have air conditioning and the windows are not desigend to support standard window mounted air conditioners. We are nervous to buy a portable air conditioner. I read consumer reports and they gave portable air conditioners very poor ratings. Have you tried them and do they work? If you have had a positive experience, which one would you recommend?

Do all air conditioners have to go in a window to work? Or can I just buy one to plug in to an outlet?
Q. Are there air conditioners I just simply plug into an outlet and start cooling or do all Air conditioners have to go in a window to work? What's the simplest way to get an A/C going? I'm not very good with this stuff.

A. the plug in portables don't do much cooling, so I'd say buy a fan and fill the window with that if you can't get an A/C into the window. they just make noise and use electricity.

Are air conditioners supposed to have frost buildup on the outside of the unit?
Q. I live in an apartment complex and our air conditioner is getting ice/frost buildup in certain places on the unit when it has been on for a while. Is this normal, or should I call maintenance to come fix it?
Asked by blondebylaw - Mon May 18 15:50:40 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Are you running it in heat or in air condition mode? If you are running in heat and you have a heat pump it will have frost/ice build up for at least 60 to 90 minutes then it will go into defrost to melt the ice, if after that time has expired and you still have ice/frost then you have problem with defrost board. IF you are running it in cooling and getting ice/frost on the coil you have problems. Shouldn't be ice or frost on coil, maybe on the piping at the unit then i say you undercharged or overcharged or dirty indoor coil, filter or blower problems.

How good are goldstar window air conditioners good at keeping the room cold once the air conditioner is off?
Q. So I got one today and they are pretty loud to loud for me to be able to sleep with it on. so I was curious how long the room would stay cool once the air conditioner is turned off?
Asked by hannah - Sat Jun 5 20:21:19 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You are going through the adjustment you are going to have to face while you get used to the noise. You will adjust in a few days. You will just have a hard few days. I recently remarried and my wife needs to sleep with her very noisy fan. She has grown so used to the noise she will not go through the adjustment she needs to go through when it isn't on. Likewise, when you turn it off in the fall you will have to readjust then as well. The A/C will do absolutely nothing to keep the room cool if it is off. Maybe you can take it back and get one with a thermostat on it so it will go on and off as needed.

Why are Fuzzy Logic air conditioners more energy efficient than Thermostats?
Q. It's common knowledge that through the use of carefully crafted Fuzzy Logic rules, an air conditioner can be more energy efficient than a thermostat. What I am curious to know is WHY this is so. Thanks!
Asked by Neil S - Wed Apr 1 09:25:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Two factors contribute to this increased efficiency: First, fuzzy logic control can take advantage of air conditioning machinery which can be set to different levels of output. A thermostats is simply a thermometer, with an electrical switch set to turn "on" when the temperature exceeds the selected threshold. Some air conditioning systems, though, can scale their output (for example by turning on some or all of their units). Fuzzy logic can scale its demand for air conditioning, based on the temperature and humidity. Second, fuzzy logic allows for a more sophisticated control process. Rather than activating the air conditioning system only when it is either "too hot" or "too humid", it can also do so when it is merely "warm and… [cont.]
