Cooks select and combine ingredients using a wide range of tools and methods. In the process, the flavor, texture, appearance, and chemical properties of the ingredients can change. Cooking techniques and ingredients vary widely across the world, reflecting unique environmental, economic, or cleaning Cleanliness is the absence of dirt, including dust, stains, bad smells and garbage. Purposes of cleanliness include health, beauty, absence of offensive odor, avoidance of shame, and to avoid the spreading of dirt and contaminants to oneself and others. In the case of glass objects such as windows or windshields, the purpose can also be.
Traditionally, home appliances are classified into:
- Major appliances A major appliance, or domestic appliance, is usually defined as a large machine which accomplishes some routine housekeeping task, which includes purposes such as cooking, food preservation, or cleaning, whether in a household, institutional, commercial or industrial setting. An appliance is differentiated from a plumbing fixture because it uses (or "White goods")
- Small appliances Small appliance refers to a class of home appliances that are portable or semi-portable or which are used on tabletops, countertops, or other platforms. Such items are contrasted with major appliances, which are typically fixtures that cannot be easily moved. All appliances are intended to perform, enable, or assist in performing a job or changing (or "Brown goods")

Types of appliances
Appliances may be divided into categories called "white goods" and "brown goods" in British English. Appliances may be divided into categories called "small appliances" and "major appliances" in American English.
- Brown goods/Small appliances are typically small household electrical entertainment appliances such as:
- White goods/Major appliances comprise major household appliances and may include:
Some types of brown goods were traditionally finished with or looked like wood or bakelite Bakelite , or polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, is an early plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was developed in 1907–1909 by Belgian chemist Dr. Leo Baekeland. This is now rather rare, but the name has stuck, even for goods that are unlikely ever to have been provided in a wooden case (e.g. camcorders). White goods were typically painted or enamelled white, and many of them still are. The addition of new items to these categories shows that the categories still serve a purpose in marketing Marketing is the process by which companies create customer interest in products or services. It generates the strategy that underlies sales techniques, business communication, and business development. It is an integrated process through which companies build strong customer relationships and create value for their customers and for themselves.
This division is also noticeable in the service area of these kinds of products. Brown goods usually require high technical knowledge and skills (which get more complex with time, such as going from a soldering iron to a hot-air soldering station), while white goods need more practical skills and "brute force" to manipulate the devices and heavy tools required to repair them.
There is usually a problem with microwave ovens, because these sell alongside refrigerators and dishwashers, but microwave ovens contain complex electronic boards (the clock and controller) which white-good servicemen refuse to repair (as they don't have the training or tools required to do so). Some brands send whole boards for replacement, and some have them repaired by such technicians.

Q. I'd like to be able to figure out how much it's costing me to use my ancient refrigerator, or my new, 2800W toaster. Maybe to see if it's worth my while to put the laundry on the line outside, or just throw it in the dryer. To measure the amperage, you need to get a reading on just one lead into the plug. Measuring the current in the cable to any appliance yields a net zero amps, because you get the inflow and outflow in the same measurement, and these cancel each other.

A. P3 International makes an inexpensive device known as a "Kill-a-watt" that allows the user to measure the volts, amps, watts, volt-amps, power factor, and kilowatt-hours of anything plugged into it. Follow the link below. Keep in mind that electricty consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours. This is a combination of watts and time. Your refrigerator is running the entire month, yet the toaster is used for brief periods each day. 2800 watts looks a bit high for a toaster. Is this a commercial grade appliance?
