Gas is one of three classical states of matter. Near absolute zero, a substance exists as a solid. As heat is added to this substance it melts into a liquid at its melting point (see phase change), boils into a gas at its boiling point, and if heated high enough would enter a plasma state in which the electrons are so energized that they leave their parent atoms from within the gas. A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas or atomic gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). A gas mixture would contain a variety of pure gases much like the air. What distinguishes a gas from liquids and solids is the vast separation of the individual gas particles. This separation usually makes a colorless gas invisible to the human observer. The interaction of gas particles in the presence of electric and gravitational fields are considered negligible as indicated by the constant velocity vectors in the image.

The gaseous state of matter is found between the liquid and plasma states, the latter of which provides the upper temperature boundary for gases. Bounding the lower end of the temperature scale lie degenerative quantum gases which are gaining increased attention these days. High-density atomic gases super cooled to incredibly low temperatures are classified by their statistical behavior as either a Bose gas or a Fermi gas. For a comprehensive listing of these exotic states of matter see list of states of matter.

What is the partial pressure of gas A expressed after equilibration?
Q. Two gases are contained in gas bulbs connected by a valve. Gas A is present in a 1 liter bulb at a pressure of 874 torr. Gas B exerts a pressure of 457 torr in a 1 liter bulb. The valve is opened and the two gases equilibrate. What is the partial pressure of gas A expressed after equilibration? Answer in torr.

A. 437 torr. Boyle's law: PV=PV 1L*874 torr.= 2L*P P=437 torr. This is the way I'll think of it, because only the volume changed to 2L. But I am not sure that this is the answer for certain. So just wait a while and see if anyone else agrees or have a better answer.

When a gas is adiabatically compressed, what happens to temperature and pressure?
Q. Suppose we have 1L of any ideal gas at 300K and 100kPa. If the gas is compressed adiabatically to 1/2 its initial volume, neglecting friction, shouldn't temperature rise to 600K and pressure increase to 400kPa. I've come to this conclusion because if the finite amount of kinetic energy is reduced to 1/2 its initial volume, the kinetic energy should be twice as concentrated and therefore temperature should double. Then applying PV=nRT, pressure must quadruple to balance the equation.

A. Your argument about energy being concentrated is not valid. Neglecting the work done in compressing the gas, the kinetic energy would be concentrated, as you say, by a factor of two per unit of volume, but since there are twice as many particles per unit volume, the kinetic energy per particle would remain the same. Look in your course materials. I am not sure what you are being asked, but in adiabatic compression both pressure and temperature increase, and the math gets quite complicated and turns out to involve the specific heat of the gas since P, V, T and w are all connected.

What is the most gas and price efficient car on the market today?
Q. Yesterday, I had the heart stopping realization that the full tank of gas I put into my 94' ford exoplorer Monday on the way to work, was now on E less than a day later on the way home from work. With gas prices at an all time high, I know that one could understand how alarming this is. Since my place of residence isn't going to change anytime soon, and neither is my job or the time it takes (one hour and 30 minutes) to get there, I need a smaller, more compact car with gas burning efficiency out of this world. But, since I just started my job, I need it not to burn a hole completely through my pocket. I know a friend of mine has an 05' Impala that gets 33 miles to the gallon. Does anyone have another choice other than this one?

A. Well, you might not like it, but for the money, a Scion Xb would be perfect. They get 35 mpg and start at 13,500 brand new. It's cool if you wanna drive a toaster. I got my wife one, surprisingly, I really like it. 25 bucks to fill it last a week and a half.
