What is the best air filter that you can buy?
Q. I'm having to change my air filter every 2 or 3 weeks. My townhome is about 1200 square feet, but I don't understand why I have to change the filters so often. I have tried the air filters that are about $20 for one, and the cheaper ones that are $15 for 3. The $20 filter lasted about a week longer than the others, but for the cost it doesn't really add up. Home depot sells an air filter that costs $100, and it's suppose to be for 30 years or something. Anyway, what's the best air filter that I can buy?

A. In the past 7 years I have never seen a $100.00 filter at the HD. But to answer you question on the effectiveness on the filters, which by the way should be changes every 90 days, the spun fiber glass is the cheapest and worst filter you can buy. One way to see for yourself is to take baby powder and sprinkle it over the filter, just about all the powder fall through. With the 3 for $15.00, naturalaire filters, they fare better in stopping the talc powder. The best would be the 3M Electrostatic filters. Take a look at the MERV rating on your filters when you buy them. If you are asthmatic or have severe allergies, I would recommend the 3M filters, otherwise the Naturalaire filters work just fine. By the way I use the naturalaire. Edit: An… [cont.]

How do change an air filter element on an 1974 850cc Norton?
Q. The air filter front plate on this bike has some curious plumbing on the inside which does not allow it to slide away from the air filter. They must be removed as one. The bike is original. Replacing is a nightmare because the air hoses must be seated. I have run out of patience! Some one know.

A. I own a 74 850, although, as soon as I bought it I changed it to a K&N dual inlet airfilter, and since have converted to a single Amal carb with a foam sock type filter. However, I did install the stock unit once. I believe most of the difficulty is because the rubber air tubes get stiff with age (just like me). Pull the rubber tubes from the front plate and assemble the airbox. Boil a pan of water and throw the air tubes in for a few minutes this will make them soft and pliable for a short time so you have to work quickly to get them in. I think thats how I did it, but, I must admit its been a number of years. If you get stuck post your question again on the forum at www.jerrydoe.com bookmark that site it is a wealth of info read and… [cont.]

Can you clean a dirty air filter?
Q. The filter in my air conditioning/heating unit (in my apartment) is extremely dirty. Maintenance is supposed to come and change them once a month, but I guess they haven't gotten around to it this month. I plan on getting a new one soon, but I'm wondering - is it possible to clean them somehow, until I get a new one? I've noticed that since it has been dirty, the system is much louder (running the heat OR the a/c). Could this be due to the dirty filter, or may there be something else wrong with the system?

A. Yes you can and it will help with the noise, if there is nothing else wrong with the system. Usually when air filters are dirty the system is stressing and working harder to suck in as much air as its shooting out cause it cant shoot out air if it can't suck it in to cool it down or heat it up. You can use a hose attachment on a vacume cleaner just be very careful and gentle the filters are easy to damage if there the cheap kind. If your vacum cleaner has a setting for low, use it. Another option is to clan off all the big stuff off the filter then use a can of air, ususally sold at computer stores or walmart in the electronics dept by their computer stuff, and blow all the dust off from both sides. A. Sure, just make the new end as strong as the original. Better yet, for about 20 dollars you can buy an adjustable filter that lasts a lifetime.

Installing a Cone air filter on a stock intake tube?
Q. I am planning to install a cone air filter (those found in autozone) in the place of a stock air box of the air intake. But i am planning to keep the original rubber tube. Is that possible? I know it will not give as many hp as the CAI... Will there be any problems such as check engine light turning on? Any help is appreciated... By the way the car is a 95 maxima.
Asked by Napalm84 - Wed Oct 31 16:37:04 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Are you open for a better idea? Replace the air filter inside your present (COLD) air- box With a K&N. Forget the cone filter because you'll forever be drawing underhood hot air. There's more oxygen (wich turns into power) in cold air than stale old hot air.

What is the best oil filter and engine air filter for 2004 Saturn ION 2 sedan car?
Q. What is the best oil filter and engine air filter for 2004 Saturn ION 2 sedan car and where can we buy it cost effectively? Any one has an idea what brand filters Saturn dealership is using? I am thinking we should find out what they are using and instead of paying them very high ...we should do it ourselves.
Asked by vikasintl - Thu Apr 23 17:44:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. All Saturn cars have AC-Delco filters throughout the car from the factory. Wix, Modorcraft (made by Purolator) and Purolator Gold by name are equally as good. If the Saturn dealer isn't using AC-Delco filters the public is being ripped. Be extreemly careful if you intend to use a replacement K&N air cleaner on a GM (Saturn) product that's still under factory warranty. Do not let your certified Saturn dealer see it in your car or your factory warranty will evaporate like Casper the ghost. Cheap discount store Fram filters should be left on the discount store shelves.

Can I deduct an air conditioner, air filter and back pillow for my home office from my taxes for my business?
Q. I work at home, and I take the home office deduction. I have a separate room that is my regular office space used exclusively as an office, so that is not the question. I'm just sure if these are particular items I would be able to deduct. I bought a back pillow from the chiropractor for my typing chair, and I need to buy an air filter for this horrible allergy season and an air conditioner for the home offfice. Are these expenses I can deduct since they will only be used in the home office? Do I need to depreciate them? When depreciating, is there a minimum dollar amount? The back pillow was only 25 bucks. If I don't depreciate it, what category would that be? Thanks for any information!! I have looked up a lot of info on this… [cont.]

A. I assume you qualify for the home office deduction. A $25 pillow doesn't have to be depreciated, just deduct it from supplies or list it separately. The air filter can be expensed using Section 179. The air conditioning unit is specifically excluded from Section 179 treatment. You need to depreciate it over five years.

What could cause oil in the air filter and houseing?
Q. The other day my car started to loose power on the freeway(as it has so many times before) I pulled over a few times and restarted it..Soon after I smelled somthing burning and when I opened the hood, oil was leaking from the air breather onto the exaust manifold and had caught on fire. After further inspection I realized that oil was also in the air filter houseing as well as all over the filter. The car is able to start and run. Any Ideas Please let me know.

A. More than likely, there is either a permanent mechanical problem inside your engine or there is a problem with your pcv (emissions) system. It's best to have a certified / licensed professional determine the source, because it is either relatively minor or very major.

Is a dirty air filter enough to keep a motorcycle engine from starting?
Q. I recently purchased a 2006 ninja 650r that would turn over but not fire. The battery is fully charged, there's fresh fuel in the tank, I have spark at the plugs, the fuel pump is working fine, and there's good compression. I did notice that the air filter is pretty dirty. Would something that simple be enough to keep the engine from firing? Pulled the filter and it still doesn't run. I guess it'll go into the shop next...

Does a new air filter make that much difference?
Q. I just replaced the air filter in our Suburban. I don't think it's been changed for 6 years. It seems to be more powerful now. Could this really be the case or am I just dreaming?
Asked by busboy - Thu Jun 29 12:21:56 2006 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I have a cleanable air cleaner and I clean it at every oil change. A vital part of the internal combustion engine is oxygen. Letting your air cleaner get gummed up with 6 years of grim is literally strangling your engine. I would replace an air cleaner every two or three oil changes (which should occur about every 3000 miles or so I don't care what the manual may say) or buy one from a company like K&N that is cleanable and clean it every oil change.

Q. It's a 1979 Chevrolet Caprice Classic. It has an 5.7 (350cc) Liter engine. The oil is coming through a hose leading from the engine block to the air filter casing. A. Piston rings are shot. Make sure your PVC system is clear, other than that It is time for an overhaul! Additional Details Well how do i know if its the piston rings just in case what are some symptoms? You may not be able to test for worn rings. You can do a compression test but can still get decent readings if the cylinders are full of oil. The oil control rings are probably stuck tighter than a nun's (well you know). The engine is 31 years old with no telling what kind of mileage. There is wear in the cylinders. A couple of things you can do are this, 1. Remove the valve covers and clean all the crud out from there. There can be some carbon buildup that is partially blocking the oil drain back ports in the rear of the heads… [cont.]

If the AIR FILTER in my car is installed incorrectly, could it cause engine damage?
Q. I'm trying to change my air filter in my car and it's a tight fit. If it's not positioned exactly correct, could it do damage to the engine?

A. If the air filter is not installed properly and making an airtight seal you could destroy your engine. The particles in the air will be ingested into the engine and will at best cause excessive wear to the moving parts inside and damage the fuel delivery system and at worst cause a catastrophic failure of the engine by contaminating the oil and causing bearing failure. Make sure it's installed correctly and replaced regularly.

How do you change push mower air filter?
Q. is there any instructions or PDF's on the net on how to change a puch mower air filter.

A. Typically older push mowers used a 'steel housing' for their air cleaner assemblies - mounted with a simple slotted screw to the carb housing - on the right side of the mower ( looking from behind) . Unscrew the slotted screw and the cover comes off exposing the air filter element- usually a foam type - Remove and install replacement ( you can either take old one in or that and motor numbers - stamped into flywheel shroud on top of the motor) . New ones use part of the plastic shroud or a plastic cover to hold the filter in - a paper type. Typically its held on by a single machine screw , the cover comes off and the filter cartridge is right there - looks like a small automotive filter. Replacement is similar, motor numbers usually on a… [cont.]
