A. Todd, There are more than two types of diesel. However D1 and D2 are not used as you say they are. Number 1 is a lighter more aromatic type of fuel oil. Its not quite Kerosene but it is lighter than Number 2 diesel. It is commonly referred to as winter diesel as it will gel at lower temperatures than D2. Number 2 diesel is a heavier fuel oil that is most commonly used in most diesel engines. It generates more energy per gallon than D1, but is more prone to gelling in cold weather without treatment. There are heavier grades of fuel oil going all the way up to number 6. These provide more energy per gallon but are much more viscous and require heating for them to flow properly. What you are thinking of is on road and off road diesel… [cont.]
