Why are air conditioners set to 25 C more efficient than other temperatures?
Q. Besides saving more energy, what are other reasons? Why not set the air conditioners to 22 C or other temperatures? Is there something to do with the way the motor of the air conditioners work?
Asked by Pops - Sat Apr 3 05:53:22 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends if the air conditioner is cooling down to 25 or heating up to 25. The tempertaure which is closest to ambient will be the most energy efficient.

How do air conditioners produce so much water?
Q. I have one of those large single-room air conditioners because my air conditioner system just doesn't cut it, and it's linked to the outside by a hose, so I have to empty the water when it gets full. How does it manage to produce about 5 pounds of water in just a few hours? Thanks for your answers!
Asked by ILOVESCIENCE - Thu Aug 10 16:31:18 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You must have a large amount of water vapor in your air. An air conditioner works by sucking the air out of your room and then running it through it's insides. When this happens, all of the humidity in the air is removed, which creates the water. The air is then run through the compressor where the air is.. well.. compressed which makes it colder, and therefore cold and dry air is blown back into your room making the room nice and cool and confortable. Naturally, the more water vapor that is in the air, the more water vapor that is going to be removed and turned into water.

Asked by stjernekropp - Wed Aug 13 16:46:54 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your air conditioner works against the outside temperature. The more work it does, the more energy it uses. In general, if you set the temperature higher, you pay less for cooling. (That fan works all the time, but the compressor turns on & off as the thermostat calls for more cooling. The compressor is the larger load. The longer it spends running, the more you pay.)

A. Window type air conditioners usually has a button/switch that allows you to select either circulating the same air inside or to pull air from outside. As far as the issue of indoor air quality. Air quality has been suffering ever since we started making new homes more and more air tight. Some say this is the cause of the increase of asthma, etc. Think of this - you lay new carpet that has a chemical you happen to be slighly allergic too. Day in and day out you are breathing in this chemical and also allergic to it. And, people wonder why we have a dramatic increase in breathing problems. good luck!

Portable Air Conditioners - Do they really work?

The building does not have air conditioning and the windows are not desigend to support standard window mounted air conditioners. We are nervous to buy a portable air conditioner. I read consumer reports and they gave portable air conditioners very poor ratings. Have you tried them and do they work? If you have had a positive experience, which one would you recommend?

Air conditioners were the air comes out the bottom?
Q. Do they make such air conditioners? I have one window, I plan to take it out and put in a air conditioner, but I need one that has the air blowing out from the bottom 'cause my window is quite high and there is a drop in the ceiling so a regular one would only blow air up into the ceiling and not into the room. Can anyone help me out?
Asked by Group836 - Sun Jul 29 00:48:20 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Cool air descends and hot air rises, so it doesn't matter if the window is up near the ceiling, because the cool air from the air conditioner would still circulate down to where you are. Additional: The downside to the portable air conditioner mentioned below is that the hose that goes from it to the outside window becomes hot, and then radiates heat from it making the area around the unit hot. You pretty much have to wrap the hose in some type of insulation to not waste energy trying to keep it cool as well. Additional: The diverter the person below mentions is, I believe, one of those curved plastic covers that one nomally uses on floor heating vents to move the air in a sideways manner, rather than allowing it to go straight up out of… [cont.]

A. You'll just need to find another way to mount the AC, like attaching a bracket to the wall instead of the window frame. Make sure you screw into the studs and not just the sheetrock.

A. That is a dirty trick, but here is no law that says landlords need to provide air conditioners. Does it mention an air conditioner in your lease? The lease may spell out what the landlord provides. If it says you get one, then you have grounds for complaint. If not plan on moving next year. Grandpa

Q. I have a small window-mounted air conditioner. It blows ice cold air for about an hour. Then it doesn't blow quite as cold. After 2 hours the air is downright warm. If I turn it off and let it "rest" for a few hours, its back to normal. What causes that?
Asked by David - Mon Jul 26 07:40:57 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The number one cause of something like this is dirt. If this is an older unit, I would suspect dirt being the culprit, and I'll get into that in a second. If it's brand new, it has a mechanical problem and you should return it as soon as you can. Back to an older unit, and this can mean something even one year old, the filter is far and away the most common problem leading to this condition. Easy fix, - remove and clean the filter and put it back in again. While you have it out, look at the coil directly behind it. If that appears to have a lot of debris on it as well, it to will have to be cleaned. This is the *most common* reason for the problem you are experiencing, and when the unit is running and NOT cooling, you may find that the… [cont.]

A. putting it in the garage would be a bad ideal...the garge would get way to hot and the condenser wouldnt cool the freon efficiently making the unit not cool good plus the compressor wouldnt last long because of high pressure on the valves plus the oil that lubricates it would break down because of the high heat and damage your compressor also..

Why are Fuzzy Logic air conditioners more energy efficient than Thermostats?
Q. It's common knowledge that through the use of carefully crafted Fuzzy Logic rules, an air conditioner can be more energy efficient than a thermostat. What I am curious to know is WHY this is so. Thanks!
Asked by Neil S - Wed Apr 1 09:25:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Two factors contribute to this increased efficiency: First, fuzzy logic control can take advantage of air conditioning machinery which can be set to different levels of output. A thermostats is simply a thermometer, with an electrical switch set to turn "on" when the temperature exceeds the selected threshold. Some air conditioning systems, though, can scale their output (for example by turning on some or all of their units). Fuzzy logic can scale its demand for air conditioning, based on the temperature and humidity. Second, fuzzy logic allows for a more sophisticated control process. Rather than activating the air conditioning system only when it is either "too hot" or "too humid", it can also do so when it is merely "warm and… [cont.]
