A. The energy efficiency has nothing to do with the deduction on your tax return. You may be eligible for a tax credit if the energy savings is enough. Check with your state Department of Revenue (or whatever the name is of your tax department). The next paragraph is based on the wild assumption that you are referring to a rental property. If the air conditioner is for your personal residence (primary home or vacation home), then there is no deduction. Are you talking about a central A/C system or a window "box"? A window box unit, while you can hide it under "repairs" is eligible for the Section 179 expense deduction. (This is like depreciation, but you take the entire amount in the first year.) When does an air conditioner go bad and when does the coils go bad?
Q. We have an air conditioner and the air conditioner has not been used in six yrs because we moved. We came back and the freon had evaportated out and we had some more put in September and again in April The fan blows and air comes out the vents. There are ant piles near it. Could the ants have gotten into it and stopped it for working? Also the pipe outside freezes up and so does the one inside. What could the problem be?

A. Almost certainly you have a refrigerant leak. The company who charged the refrigerant should have and can check for leaks. I would suggest a different company come out and check for and repair any leaks and recharge your system. The freezing is almost certainly low refrigerant charge.

Why is my air conditioner still freezing after I changed the filter?
Q. I forgot to change the filter of my air conditioner unit for a whole year (whoops!) and just thought about it the other day, at which time I opened it up and found that the whole thing, although running fine, was frozen over and dripping all over the floor. I let it thaw out then changed the filter, but it still keeps freezing over every time I turn it on now. How can I fix this, or do I need to call a technician? I live in Miami so the season never ends here, so buying a new unit will be expensive regardless. The AC still works, just freezes over every time it runs. Turning it off is very difficult because it's hot here 24/7 so I guess I'll have to pray I can get someone out here to fix it soon.

A. only 2 reasons for it to freeze over 1 dirty a-coil...since you went a year without changing your filter this could be the only problem...2 low on freon...this means you have a leak somewhere...it is legal to just have it recharged...but i would recommend you get it fixed when your cooler seasons starts
