Does my air conditioner need to be energy efficient to claim on tax return?
Q. I need to replace the air conditioner in my rental. In order for me to claim the expense on my tax return. Does the air conditioner need to be energy efficient or not?

A. The energy efficiency has nothing to do with the deduction on your tax return. You may be eligible for a tax credit if the energy savings is enough. Check with your state Department of Revenue (or whatever the name is of your tax department). The next paragraph is based on the wild assumption that you are referring to a rental property. If the air conditioner is for your personal residence (primary home or vacation home), then there is no deduction. Are you talking about a central A/C system or a window "box"? A window box unit, while you can hide it under "repairs" is eligible for the Section 179 expense deduction. (This is like depreciation, but you take the entire amount in the first year.) Will evaporative air conditioner work in my room?
Q. I am in the Philippines and humidity is around 70. I have a room of about 40sqm. I am not into a room so cool where an A/c usually do. I am okay when the room is just into a normal room temperature or a little cooler, but not that cold where I need to cover myself in bed sheets or warmer. Can an evaporative air conditioner fulfill my needs?

How do you fit a air conditioner in a horizontal sliding window?
Q. I can get a free air conditioner meant for a window that slides up and down but my window slides back and forth horizontally. How can I block the rest of the window and secure the air conditioner so it doesn't fall out? I live in a 2nd floor apartment so it needs to be secure otherwise it could possibly break or hurt someone. Thanks

A. It is only meant for a vertical slider because thats the way it is setup. to convert it to a horizontal application: 1. you will need the mount bracket currently on it or buy 1 to go from back of unit to the wall at a 45 degree angle- this in conjuction with the vertical blank help to hold unit in. 2. you need a vertical blank off - same as the horizontal one only it mounts to top of unit and extends upward available from manufacturer though most common fix i have seen around is to cut a piece of half inch plywood to fill gap and paint it then caulk it into place. if you are in an apartment need to be sure landlord allows window units.
